The story of Golden Compass centers around the adventures of Lyra Belacqua an orphan girl .
Lyra living in a world that looks much like our own but in that world a dogmatic ruling power called the Magisterium is conspiring to end tolerance and free inquiry.In Lyra's world a person's soul resides outside human body in an animal-like form called daemon
In that Era a lot of poor, orphan and gyptian children are disappearing at the hands of a group call the Gobblers. Her adventure was begun when she discovers that Mrs. Coulter is running the Gobblers.
After escaped from Mrs.Coulter house she was rescued by the Gyptians, Lyra joins them on a trip to the far north in search of the missing children including her best friends, Roger and Billy .
Meanwhile, Ms.Coulter always want to get Lyra's alethiometer (Golden Compass)
Mrs.Coulter is one of the antagonist character in this story.
Marisa Coulter in fact is Lyra mother's, she born Lyra from her love affair with Lord Asriel.
Although throughout most of the series Lyra hates and fears her mother, but every time Coulter appears she saves Lyra. For example when Mrs. Coulter saves Lyra from having her daemon cut away (a process known as intercision.) In the end of the story, Ms.Coulter revealed that She is Lyra's mother and Lord Asriel is Lyra's father.
Lyra always regarded Lord Asriel as his uncle. After travelling to the South, Lord Asriel visited Jordan College where he was almost poisoned by the Master, who read his alethiometer and saw that Lord Asriel's actions would be dangerous. Asriel was saved by Lyra, who secretly watched the Master pour the poison into Lord Asriel's wine glass. Lord Asriel was in his expeditions in North when he was caught by the Magisterium.
In the end of the story Lyra and her friends fly north in search of Lord Asriel.
